Nail fungus is a common disease that affects around 11% of world population. This kind of infection produces many symptoms ranging from tingling to an intense pain. People suffer specially for the ugly appearance generated by the presence of these parasitic entities. Many individuals are very ashamed to expose their feet to the public. It is a condition that must be eliminated as soon as possible. However, finding an adequate and effective treatment can be quite complicated.

Risk factors that should be avoided

This kind of infection also known as onychomycosis affects the main constituent of nails which is a protein known as keratin. This type of disease can affect many areas including the bed, the plaque, and the root.

The infection develops slowly and causes discoloration, thickening and deformation of the nail. It occurs more frequently on the toenails than on hands. You usually do not feel any pain at first, but the appearance of the affected area usually becomes very unpleasant.

Onychomycosis is usually produced by dermatophyte fungi, which is also responsible for the condition known as Athlete Foot as explained at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC544172/. Another common causative agent is known as Candida albicans which spreads really fast throughout the deepest layers of tissue.

Shoes that cause sweating in feet, humid environments and occasional damages on feet or hands are some of the risk factors that should be avoided to prevent fungal infections. However, it is important to mention that diseases like psoriasis and diabetes also play an important role on the emergence of this condition.

Taking care of an infected nail

Anti-fungal medications, such as tablets and nail polish, are some of the most used resources against onychomycosis. The physician or the pharmacist will recommend the patient the most appropriate treatment for their particular case. It is important to bear in mind that the nail may not recover its original aspect after the disappearance of the infection.

In the case of anti-fungal medications, the compound reaches the infected nail through the bloodstream. Terbinafine and Itraconazol are the two most commonly prescribed drugs to treat onychomycosis and they can be quite effective. However, it is worth to mention that these elements can do more harm than good in certain circumstances.

Terbinafine is contraindicated for patients with a weakened immune system, kidney disease and liver disorders. This medicine should not be used by pregnant ladies or women that are breast-feeding. During the treatment, the person should avoid sunlight as much as possible since the medication could make their skin sensitive to solar rays.

It is important to mention that people who have used this medicine have reported some adverse effects like indigestion, headache, diarrhea, itchiness and changes on circadian cycle to mention some. The loss of taste is another frequent repercussion attributed to the use of Terbinafine. If you notice more unpleasant reactions, call your doctor immediately.

Negative effects attributed to the intake of Itraconazol include vomiting, nausea and skin rush. Less common reactions are abdominal pain, diarrhea, sexual impotence, malaise, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite and increased blood pressure to mention some. This medicine may also affect liver and kidney performance.
